Work from Home – Network Marketing
This is the 4th part in my Work from Home series where I am showing the myriad of ways you can earn an income working from home. You can find the others at Work from Home, Work from Home – Internet Marketing and Work from Home – Affiliate Marketing.
You can work from home and do Network Marketing online, offline or do a combination of both.
I have written about Network Marketing many times on this blog. Network Marketing is also called Multi Level Marketing (MLM), Direct Marketing and Referral Marketing. Some of my previous posts tell you the advantages, how it works and the history. Some of them can be found at;
- Network Marketing
- Network Marketing Business
- Network Marketing Today – this link is to the fist of a 5 part series
- What is MLM? – this is a 6 part series
If you are going to Work from Home then I advise you to include a Network Marketing business as part of your business. There are many reasons I say this and the main one is – Residual income. Income that keeps being paid to you.
Work from Home – Network Marketing
What is Network Marketing? (or MLM)?
Wikipedia defines MLM as “Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation. Other terms for MLM include network marketing, direct selling, and referral marketing.”
Network Marketing is a very fair method of distribution. It is a method of distributing products and services directly to the consumer. Rather than going through shops and retail outlets it uses a marketing network of self-employed people to find customers.
These self employed people are called a range of things including distributors, associates, consultants, independent business owners, members and representatives.
It is now 65 years since the method of distribution began and it is still often misunderstood and treated with suspicion.
While the industry continues to have its critics some of the richest men in the world are advocating, starting or purchasing Network Marketing Companies. They’re the World’s Business Experts, Visionaries & Trendsetters and include Robert Kiyosaki, Donald Trump, Sir Richard Branson and Warren Buffet.
Robert Kiyosaki ~ Business of the 21st Century explains Network Marketing by saying ;
“By it’s very nature and design, network marketing is a strikingly fair, democratic and socially responsible system of generating wealth.
These may be economic hard times for the majority, but for the many entrepreneurs, these are times teeming with economic potential.”
“Not only is now the time to have your own business, but there has never been a better time than right now.”….
Here are some of the additional benefits of Network Marketing:
- Minimal start-up capital
- You use sweat equity to build an asset
- No asset risk (you don’t have to borrow against your house to start it)
- Virtually risk free
- Established systems and training (with most companies)
- No employees, premises, need to carry stock or debtors
- You support and train independent business developers
- Low overheads
- You can have true time freedom
- The business should eventually work without you
- Lifestyle choices
In Network Marketing you are building an asset that can be passed on to generations to come. In most companies your business can also be sold.
Traditionally people built their Network Marketing Business offline by word of mouth. Today with the internet we can use online methods to build our businesses. The online world gives us the ability to build global businesses.
We no longer have to travel around the country (or world) conduction meetings. We can use such things as webinars to connect people.

Hi Sue,
thanks for sharing your insights. I do network marketing and I love it because I love to work from home, online and on the phone. I love it to earn money by helping people. Truth to be told, we might call it our business, but at the end of the day, we’re building someone else’s business. This is not bad as such, but something we need to keep in mind when we build it.
Take care
Oliver
Sue says
Hi Oliver
You raise such a good point in that we really are building someone else’s business. I was anti network marketing for a long time because of that. But after a few significant ups and downs in business I decided that maybe network marketing was worth a fly as the risks were much less.
I think we are doing a wise thing within network marketing by building our brands online (meaning ourselves).
Thanks Oliver
Sue

Thank you for these informative and useful arcticles. It’s very useful for me, becuse I have a one-year-old son, so it’s better for me to work at home. I just started online-marketing, so I love your whole blog!

Hi Sandy
I am glad you like my blog and good on you for working at home. All the best with it.

Hi Sue,
Ah, another great post in this series and of course one of my favorites.
This was an excellent explanation so the next time someone visits my blog and is confused, I’m going to send them right over here. I sometimes get people who have never heard of network marketing and instead of explaining this to them each time I thought about writing about it but you’ve done such a wonderful job with this.
I’m enjoying this series and I do hope others are finding this helpful as well. Can’t wait to read about blogging now.
Enjoy your week Sue.

Hi Adrienne
I am glad it may be helpful in the future. I have blogged about network marketing quite a bit before so tried to pull in what I thought were the best bits.
It is pretty amazing to me how many people do not understand network marketing or think it is in someway dodgy (do you say that word in the USA?)
Now for the next one I am sure you could do the best job on it but never mind I will be mentioning you. 🙂
You have a great rest of your week too Adrienne

HI SUE!
Sure glad you wrote this post. I get so tired explaining this to people. This is bookmarked and saved because you have made my life a little easier when this question arises. Now all I have to do is send them here!
The language does confuse so many people and explaining the benefits of Network Marketing is well done here.
Working from home and going out to Wallmart, local churches, etc to get people to “sign up” is a strenuous process. It takes too much time. How about those house meetings? Yikes. Been there and done that!
With Network Marketing, you DO stay at home and let your fingers do all the work.
Many thanks,
Donna
Sue Price says
Hi Donna
Oh I am so glad this may be useful to both you and Adrienne. It is not always the easiest thing to get the concept across to people and as you say the language can be confusing.
Oh me too Donna with the house meetings. I especially loved standing on stands at various expos for three days straight trying to engage people – Yikes yes!
I love that technology has made our lives so much simpler with how we can build our businesses.
Thanks for your comment Donna and have a great rest of your week

Sue yes some great points about an amazing business model. When you look at the statistics of failures of traditional business plus the cost and risk involved there is no doubt that network marketing is the best entry into entrepreneurship!
Steve
Sue Price says
Hi Steve
You raise an interesting point as many people are quick to point out the failure stats in NWM so next time I will ask if they know the stats for traditional business. The thing is I believe many people in Network Marketing that do not have success have not tried and if they have may not have persevered.
Thanks for your comment and a great meeting today Steve

Definitely made for a work-at-homer! The low investment and the fact that the initiative is on YOU to earn what you can/want to earn is a lot of people’s dreams. Of course it takes some self-discipline because without a boss yelling at you to do something, it’s a lot easier to spend the morning playing games than looking for leads 🙂 Trust me, I know – I’ve worked out of my home for 13 years…. doesn’t matter what industry, there is a challenge to being your own boss! But it’s also rewarding and freeing. I hope this inspires people to reach for what they want!
Sue Price says
Hi Carol
Wow working out of home for 13 years almost makes you a veteran I reckon 🙂 Well done.
It is a very long time since I had a boss as I have worked for myself for many years and for much of it been in charge of others (was the boss). But I get what you mean with the self-discipline though because as the boss I always felt I had to set an example so I did. Now I too can spend time playing games. I think we are more invisible at home.
I love the freedom and love not having to commute each day.
I am hoping this series will give people who are thinking about working from home some ideas.
Have a great rest of your week Carol and thanks for your contribution.

These “Work From Home” series have been quite helpful as at the current time I’m kind of experimenting to do so. It’s becoming a choice each passing day, as more people discovers how working from home can positively influence their lifestyle and (of course) their career 🙂

I am already an associate with one network marketing (Multi-level marketing) company and want to become a member of another such company which is based on product marketing. Is it advisable to become it’s member?
Sue Price says
Thanks for your question. I do not know your name so I cannot address you 🙂
I certainly like to have more than one source of income if I am understanding your correctly?

Cat Alexandra says
Hi Sue,
You’ve made some outstanding points about the power of the network marketing business model and why it’s an ideal mean for one to self-empower!
One worthy point I feel is worth adding to the list is the fact that this is a business model that doesn’t discriminate based on special skills or previous experience.
I think that this is a key factor, in that ANY person may begin from literally ground zero in terms of applicable skill, education or intelligence level, and become prosperous! This is such an encouraging piece to consider because many people feel otherwise restricted in their ability to find success in the world due to prerequisites that would keep them from prospering in other business models.
Over my nearly 15 years in this industry, I’ve had the fine privilege of working with individuals who started with next to nothing and went onto achieve major breakthroughs! Network marketing allows people with limited education and/or money and skill to achieve milestones where the traditional workforce and business spaces may have not!
What a remarkable business!
Great job on detailing so many plusses to this fantastic business model, Sue!
Cat 😀
Sue Price says
Hi Cat
Oh thank you for that additional point. It is a crucial one of course. Yes network marketing levels the playing field for sure. As you say it does not discriminate.
While I have not been in the profession for anywhere near as long as you I have met some people who have made amazing amounts of income in network marketing.
I love your story Cat and the fact that Network Marketing made for you to go to college. How cool is that?
The more I look at the pluses to the business I feel amazed there are still people who are ready to attack the model with no real understanding of it.
Thanks for the great feedback Cat, I appreciate it.

Hi Sue,
I congratulate you on delivering such an easy to understand blog post on a subject matter which could be quite confusing to someone who may have heard negative experiences from others.
There are a lot of insightful comments too. I like Cat’s comment in particular as I have witnessed so many people’s lives change dramatically because of this brilliant business model. It is such an empowering way of living that I have become a keen advocate of it.
Sue, you are doing a great service by creating this home-based business series. Many people have high hopes and dreams for the family but just needed a trusted mentor to guide them. You are that leader that others can lean on. Well done!

Sue Price says
Hi Viola
Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it.
I wanted to do this series as it is so important for people to know there is a different way. We all know people who have lost their jobs or cannot find work and they need to have hope. We can show them a different way.
There is also a whole other group of people who do have jobs but no time for their family. I know that one well!
It still amazes me that many people have such negative thoughts on Network Marketing usually because they do not understand the model.
Have a great week Viola

Its a great idea to work from home through network marketing. I think that it would be less stressful and less hassle. I know that many people are starting to like working at home at their own time.

Hi Thomkins
Yes working from home is a much less stressful way of life for many people. I do not miss the commute to an office at all.
Network Marketing has many advantages.

Hi Elaine
I wish most of the people I know were in Network Marketing. 🙂 Most people I know online seem to be but my friends are not.
I too know many people who have made excellent incomes from Network Marketing. It is certainly possible.

Home network marketing is a great opportunity to get huge pay outs. I once read an article that one of the top earners in the world’s population are the people who are into network marketing and sales.
Sue Price says
Yes I have heard that top earners in the world are Network Marketers. It is amazing when you think there is a very low start up cost.
