Work from Home – Internet Marketing
Internet Marketing is one type of business many people around the world have chosen in their choice to work from home. This is my second post in this series. In my first Work from Home I listed many ways that people are choosing to work from home and leave the rat race behind them.
There are many things people can do to make money on the internet so the actual term Internet Marketing is broad. I am specifically referring here to selling products or services online.
I was first introduced to the idea of setting up a business online by the late Corey Rudl. For those of you who do not know who Corey was he was a Canadian born marketing strategist. He founded The Internet Marketing Center and was also an author, speaker and software producer.
He was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2005 at the tender age of 34. You can read more about Corey at Remember Corey. He was brilliant, vibrant, lots of fun and a really nice guy!
I was blessed to have known Corey and to have toured with him when he visited Australia teaching. At the time I was part of a company that promoted speakers.
Corey put together a course called “The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the Internet”. I know many people who followed his course and went on to have successful online businesses. I still refer to it from time to time. While many things on the internet change frequently the basics of marketing remain the same.
The top 10 marketing concepts that Corey taught were:
- Follow your passion
- Find a niche market
- Solve a problem
- Focus on benefits, not features
- Develop a strong USP (if you are not familiar with that term it is unique selling proposition)
- Provide information
- Include a call to action
- Test before you invest
- Automate, automate, automate
- Pursue multiple streams of income
The first three he tied together and taught his students to come up with a list of things they were passionate about then to find a niche market and a problem these people (potential customers) faced and to solve the problem. Of course you need to do your research and make sure other people are passionate about what you come up with.
Let’s look at Corey’s story and how he got started online as it is a great example. He was passionate about cars. His first product that he sold online was a book he wrote called “Car Secrets Revealed” . He targeted people who wanted to buy a car at $50 over dealer cost. He had started with a much broader target market but soon learned the value in being very specific about his niche and narrowing it down.
Corey taught that is was way better to find a niche market and study what products or services they are looking for and then provide it, instead of creating a product then trying to figure out who you are going to sell it to.
So what can you sell in your internet business if you work from home?
You can either sell products or services.
Work from Home and sell Products – they can be your own products that you create or other people’s products that you sell. If you chose to sell products then think about how you will deliver them.
Products that can be delivered online are simple as they reduce the need for stocking, packaging and shipping.
Things that you can deliver electronically are:
- Audios
- eBooks
- Software
- Member only web sites
- Training
If you do decide to sell physical products that must be shipped then think about using a drop shipper so you do not have to handle the process.
Work from Home and sell Services – the list here is extensive and includes things like
- Accounting
- Bookkeeping
- Computer consulting
- Data entry
- Graphic design
- Real Estate
- Mortgage broking
- Web design
- Coaching
- Tutoring
I am sure you can think of many more to add to the list.
I have been involved with a couple of online businesses where we sold physical products that needed shipping. I do not want to do that again and much prefer to sell affiliate programs or services, but that is just my choice.
If you are contemplating working from home and are not sure what to do I hope I have given you some ideas. If you do work from home please let us know in the comments below what you do. Either way please leave a comment and if you found this post of value please share with your friends.
In my next part to this Work from Home series I will be discussing Affiliate Marketing.
All the best

I never met Corey but much of what he taught back in 2005 is exactly the same as what the gurus of today preach… they are truly evergreen philosophies. He sounds like an amazing marketer and business person. Tragic loss.
You’re right Sue.. the sky is the limit when it comes to thinking about what you can sell online. Using your imagination to be different from the herd is a step in the right direction.

Hi Bob
I have heard Frank Kern talk about doing seminars with Corey when he first started out on the internet so he taught a lot of people who went on to be very successful. I could honestly listen to Corey all day and not get bored. His mind was amazing and he generated idea after idea. He talked very fast and we used to have people at the back of the room when he was teaching with signs saying “slow down”. He got off stage one time and told me he could not talk any slower 🙂
I cried for days when he was killed. Even now all these years later I get a little emotional when I see his face in pictures.
Yes Bob there are so many ways we can make money online and I agree with you that finding a way to be different from the herd is key.
Thanks for commenting Bob

Wonderful post Sue and I also never knew Corey but Derek Gehl had taken it over by the time I read that course.
I agree with Bob, everything that Corey taught is still being taught today because the formula remains the same. The ways you may market you or your products may be a little different but that’s all.
Great post sharing the different things people can do with a home business. I think it’s the best way to make a name for yourself all while you work from the comfort of your own home.
Fabulous read and thanks Sue for sharing this.
Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne
I first met Derek soon after Corey had died and it was a bit weird as he had his hair like Corey and dressed like him.
When I was writing this I was thinking how much Corey would have loved social media as clearly that is one of the things that has changed.
Thanks for your comment and you too have a great weekend.

Hi Sue,
thanks for sharing this. I have never heard about Corey and I feel sorry for his accident. Well, his teaching are right on, especially the first part: Follow your passion ! We should be a bit careful about passion though because it also contains a suffering part in the original sense of the word. That’s not we need, right ?
Take care
Oliver
Sue says
Hi Oliver
As I know you are very familiar with the Rich Dad organization Corey did some work with helping brand them too. His accident was tragic. He was a fast car enthusiast and sadly it cost him his life just a very short time after he had married.
I did not understand what you meant by your comment on passion so I Googled the word and this is the Wikipedia definition
“Passion (from the Ancient Greek verb πάσχω (paskho) meaning to suffer) is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something.”
I have never thought of passion as suffering. In Australia it is generally used in terms of something you love and in a positive way. I know that is how Corey used it.
Thanks for your comment Oliver
Have lovely weekend

This is very relevant business advice! I especially appreciate #4 because I think it’s one thing most people forget, even me! we get all excited about what we’re offering so we tell people about it and forget the most important thing, which is what’s in it for THEM.
I think selling digital products is so much easier – at least from a management standpoint. If you have inventory, there’s cost, there’s physical delivery, etc. Unless you’re actually a manufacturer selling a product I think there is a lot less stress in dealing digitally.
Good stuff, looking forward to more on affiliate marketing!
Sue says
Hi Carol
I think these are things we all know but it is good to remind ourselves occasionally.
Oh I am with you on selling digital products. I have been involved in shipping, warehousing etc and don’t want to go there again. These days I am all for simple -with ease 🙂
Thanks for your comment
Take care

Providing answer to the problem of people can help you sell more. This is the reason why it is very important that you identify first what your target market wants in order for you to resolve their problems.
Sue Price says
I could not agree more. Knowing your target market and what their problems are is fundamental to selling anything isn’t it?
Thanks for your comment and have a nice weekend.
