What is prosperity if it is not just about money?
Prosperity is most commonly associated with money or wealth however it is more than that.
Wikipedia defines prosperity as “Prosperity is the state of flourishing, thriving, good fortune or successful social status. Prosperity often encompasses wealth but also includes other factors which can be independent of wealth to varying degrees, such as happiness and health.”
Money without good health and happiness is not prosperity. We need to have all areas covered.
“Prosperity is living easily and happily in the real world, whether you have money or not”. – Jerry Gellis
Let’s have a look at each of the three areas in the Wikipedia definition as we answer the question – what is prosperity?
What is Prosperity – It includes health
It is often said that “health is the real wealth”.
Health is fundamental to being happy as without our health we cannot really enjoy all that life has to offer. Believe me I know this first hand!
I have always understood good health was important and I have eaten well and exercised all my life. That did not prevent me from facing a major health challenge this year. My health has now taken on a higher priority in my life.
However here is the kicker – to be really healthy you need money.
Money is the vehicle that enables us to eat good organic food, to take supplements and look after our bodies properly.
What is Prosperity – It includes happiness
Do we need money to be happy?
I do not believe we do however money is a vehicle that enable us to have choices in our lives. If things like travel make us happy we need money to do that.
Happiness is a choice.
I recently wrote a blog post on the subject …..12 Ways To Be Happy Right Now
Here is al little from it…
There are many ways to be happy and I will share 12 of them here that are simple and will get you fast results.
I believe everything we do in our lives is in the pursuit of happiness. Whether we want business success, great relationships, more money or to travel it is because we believe it will make us happy. You can read the rest [HERE]
What is Prosperity – It includes money
“When I chased after money, I never had enough. When I got my life on purpose and focused on giving of myself and everything that arrived into my life, then I was prosperous.” – Wayne Dyer
Money does not guarantee us health or happiness. Money gives us choices in our life.
For a long time I have understood the importance of residual income.
Facing a major health challenge and not being able to work this year amplified the need for residual income. I am grateful we do have some and we are committed to building it.
You never know what life is is going to deal you so be prepared – build a residual income.
You can read more about residual income in my post .. What is Residual Income and Why You Need It?

What is Prosperity? – Wealth, Health and Happiness
You can have it all!
Wealth, health and happiness are not mutually exclusive. In fact to have true prosperity you need all three areas covered.
“Being free and prosperous in a world at peace. That’s our ultimate goal”. – Ronald Reagan
Back to the question – what is prosperity ?…… do you agree that includes more than money?

Absolutely Prosperity is about Appreciating your Life.. I remember the first book I read after The Secret, I believe Happy for No Reason.. A real eye opener… thanks Sue great share…

I love the title of that book Helen – Happy for No Reason. It is the way we are meant to be. Thanks for your comment. 🙂
Angie says
I love this Sue, especially this line ‘Money does not guarantee us health or happiness. Money gives us choices in our life.’ Great content thanks.
Sue Price says
Thanks Angie and yes money does give us choices and I think that is something we all want. Thanks for your comment
Shaun Trewern says
For sure Prosperity is about a lot more than just money. As you state correctly in your blog, money simply provides options. More money, more options. It’s when we can begin to live our lives in the manner of our own choosing, because of those options, that happiness becomes a lot easier to maintain.
Sue Price says
Spot on with what you have said Shaun. Happiness does become easier to maintain where we can do what we really want to do. Thank you for your comment and have a great weekend.
Diana Gartland says
Sometimes we focus so much on the money, that we forget that a prosperous life comprises so much more. It’s a big picture kind of deal and it’s important to remember what the money will do for you, not the dollar amount. For example, freedom is important, and only residual income will give you true freedom, because you do the work once and continue to reap the benefits. It’s an important distinction. 🙂
Sue Price says
I agree with you Diana that we do sometimes focus too much on money. Residual income does give us true freedom. As Robert Kiyosaki always says we are only out of the rat race when our passive income is more than our expenses. A good goal to have. Thank you for your comment. 🙂

Jenny Weeks says
Sue, this is a wonderful reminder that Prosperity isn’t just about monetary wealth but good health and happiness. True, VERY true, money IS necessary to provide more choices to do the things that bring us happiness. Money is necessary to buy better quality food, which in turn, provides us with better health. Residual income is a MUST to really be as secure as possible. Thanks for a wonderful view on things!
Namaste, Jenny
Sue Price says

I agree with you Earl they are key. Thanks for commenting here.
Carol Makowski says
Very well said, Sue. Those three elements are certainly intertwined and can get us messed up with stinking thinking. On the other hand, put in proper perspective, they will lead us to a richer life. Thanks for the post.
Sue Price says
I agree Carol those three are intertwined and they do lead to a richer life. Thanks for your comment here.
Rory Singh says
Prosperity is part of abundance. And we are all meant to be abundant…in health, wealth and happiness. Wallace t Wattles the author of the Science of Getting Rich says it’s abnormal for man to not want it all. Because it is after all part of the mind, body and spirit equation.
Sue Price says
Very well put Rory. I love that book from Wallace Wattles. You have reminded me that it is time for me to revisit it. We are meant to have it all.
Thanks for your comment Rory.
Akaahan Terungwa says
Hi Sue,
Sorry to hear about your health challenge. I hope you are better at the moment?
To your question: prosperity goes well beyond money.
However, money is the pivot, the very essence of prosperity, at least, in a monetized economy – the type we operate today.
The problem is when we think it is all…for it is not, was never, and never will be.
Do make the day great.
Always,
Akaahan Terungwa

Hi Terungwa,
Nice to see you here. My health is much better and I am getting back to full strength again. It has been a journey!
Yes money is the essence of prosperity and yes it does become a problem if we think that is all it is. I know many people who are very wealthy in terms of dollars but not happy. That is sad.
Thank you for your comment and you too have a great day Terungwa.

I think that many people are chasing money as their first priority but not everyone. I know many people who have values higher than money. I agree with you that we are all here to live our own lives. Thanks for your comment.
