Jumping into iOS 8 on my iPhone
For those of you who have been reading my blog for any length of time you know I never write about technical topics. There are many bloggers who are great with technology and normally I would not venture into this type of topic.
The reason I am writing this post is to help anyone else who may have jumped in quickly and upgraded to iOS 8 on their iPhone.
Sadly I upgraded when iOS 8 was first released before I read the issues and warnings not to jump in too quickly.
I will walk you through some problems I encountered and solutions I have found but before I do here is a resource I wish I had seen before I upgraded.
Adrienne Smith very kindly sent me an email saying Carolyn Nicander Mohr had written a post on what to do before you upgrade over at The Wonder of Tech. If you have not upgraded you can find the post here. What You Need to Know Before You Update to iOS 8
Adrienne also gave me a link Carolyn shared on how to get back to version iOS 7. Sadly it was too late for me to do that as it is only available for a few days after you have upgraded. Having read the instructions and warning that this should only be done by advanced users I decided maybe it was good it was too late for me. 🙁
The problems I have encountered on iOS 8
I did download iOS 8 via iTunes on my computer as Carolyn suggests. As I read her article after I had downloaded I did not follow any of the other instructions.
# Problem 1 – I quickly ran into the storage issue.
I quickly received a warning on my iPhone saying my storage was almost full. So I did what many others have done and started madly deleting photos, videos and music.
# Problem 2 – Photos – there is no longer a camera roll and my photos have been organized into locations. It would not be so bad if the locations were correct but in some cases they are just plain wrong.
# Problem 3 – I do a lot of videos for my marketing with my iPhone. Uploading them to YouTube from my phone is taking about 10 times longer with iOS 8. I have a couple of apps I had been using which do not work effectively on this system. I now need to upload to my computer and then to YouTube.
iOS 8.2 and more problems
I waited several days after this version came out and read what others were saying. I decided to do this update last week. Hmm not sure that was a good idea either.
# Storage – Having deleted most of my photos I could not get the size of my Usage down enough with my photos and videos. Then I realized the deleted items were going into a “recently deleted” file so still taking up capacity.
After my online research I found out they stay in this “recently deleted” file for 30 days unless you go in and delete them again. So in effect you need to double delete.
Finally I was getting my storage down by now deleting my deleted items! If I had known this earlier I would not have deleted all my music 🙁
# Sending messages – this is perhaps the scariest problem I encountered.
I had sent a few text messages to people who normally respond. This puzzled me and made me wonder if the messages were being sent. They looked like they were. So I did a test text to my husband. He did not receive it.
So back online I went to research this one. What the heck did we do before Google?
I found these instructions :
If you can’t send or receive SMS, iMessage text messages after upgrading to iOS 8, you can follow these steps below.
Solutions:
Step 1. Open up the Settings app, select Messages, and tap the slider to turn, Send as SMS, iMessage off.
Step 2. Under the settings menu, go to General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings, send text messages again.
Step 3. Go back to Settings > Messages and turn Send as SMS, iMessage back on.
I followed these and now I can send SMS messages. 🙂
You can find answers to a lot of the common problems at this link

My wrap up on iOS 8
I cannot say I have found anything I really like about this operating system. I am sure there are good features but I had so many problems to deal with it has not made it a pleasant experience. I have learned a lesson though in that I will not be jumping in quickly to do updates in the future.
Over to you
If you have an iPhone have you updated? Please let me know your experience.
Have a great day.

Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sue, Thanks for the mention and link to my article. Yes, iOS 8 has caused many problems for people who have updated. It can be buggy and the bugs haven’t been eliminated yet, even with iOS 8.0.2. I’m hoping that iOS 8.1 will be out any day now to squash those bugs.
Sorry you’ve had problems with SMS. I know others have had difficulties with Bluetooth connections. Reset Network Settings solves a lot of problems, so I’m glad you discovered that trick.
I’m also sorry that you had to delete photos and music to make room for iOS 8. I would also suggest that you delete old text messages, especially ones that contain photos. That can free up a lot of space. Check to see if you have any ebooks, podcasts and/or audiobooks taking up space. Also delete any apps you’re not using.
Go to Settings => General => Usage => Manage Storage to see how much space each app is using. You may be surprised at how much space some apps are taking on your phone.
I’m sorry you learned the hard way that it doesn’t pay to be an early adopter. But I will say that the new features of iOS 8 are very cool. My favorite is the ability to add 3rd party keyboards. More on that later at The Wonder of Tech!
Please feel free to contact me if you’re having other problems with your iPhone, Sue.
Sue Price says
H Carolyn,
I thought by sharing your post here I could help others avoid what I have been through. I too hope iOS 8.1 will squash the bugs.
I know there are other people who probably do not know they cannot send SMS right now. I have checked a couple of friends phones in the last day and their settings were wrong. It seems for a lot of people the upgrade defaulted to turning SMS off.
I have deleted my old messages and yes that did help. I do have podcasts and ebooks so will check that too – thanks.
Oh yes I have learned the hard way being an early adopter is not a good choice. 🙂
Thanks for these awesome tips Carolyn and for being a great resource for us.

Hi Sue,
Wow, I’m sorry you found out about these problems the hard way, and thank you for letting people know, so they won’t have to make the same mistakes.
I know very little about technology, and I don’t have an iPhone, but Android, but I tell you those upgrades are scary at times. We see that happen every once in a while with our WP upgrades on our blogs when things start going weird as soon as we hit that button.
Thanks for this info and have a great Sunday in sunny Australia 🙂
Sue Price says
Hi Sylviane,
It sure has not been a good experience to have this happen.
Well I might become an Android user too if we get many more crazy upgrades like this one.
I think you and I are very much the same in our knowledge of technology. I just do not enjoy that side. I am amazed at how many people love it.
Thanks for your comment Sylviane and my Sunday was great thanks. I hope yours was too. Have a great week ahead.

Sue,
I am so sorry you had such a hard time upgrading your phone. I guess I was lucky or maybe just so unaware of what I was supposed to do I did not have a problem.
I don’t have a lot of pictures on my phone because I had to delete them before I could update. I did notice that they were being stored differently though.
Good to know about the double delete. That is quite annoying.
I do know how frustrating it is to have problems with updates though. I had one heck of a time with the last wordpress update. All of my comments disappeared and it took me 3 days to get them back.
Thanks for the info about my phone.

Sue Price says
Hi Dee Ann,
I am glad to hear your upgrade went smoothly. That is excellent.
I did have a lot of photos and some videos. It was time for me to get it tidied up but I would have preferred to do it a different way.
Sorry to hear you had a problem with the last WordPress update. I have a guy who I pay to handle a few things for me and this is one of them. I am just not very technically inclined so it is better for me to outsource it.
Thanks for your comment here Dee Ann. I appreciate it.

Hi Sue,
I didn’t upgrade, but my phone did it by itself! Grrr. I have had so many problems with it I want to throw it out the window! The texts don’t work, the battery life is short because other apps that I don’t want on there are running. I have the same problems as you mentioned above.
Thank you for the links you have provided so I can fix it. I was going to take it to the Apple store along with my mac because I needed to fix things up. But I have been procrastinating because once I get in there I know they will want to sell me the IPhone 6 which has problems of its own.
So now, I have a place whereby I can just link from this post and start working on it.
I appreciate this so much!
-Donna
Sue Price says
Hi Donna,
Wow that is interesting that your phone upgraded itself! It is crazy to me how you and I had similar problems and others like Dee Ann had none.
Follow my links and also read the first comment on this post by Carolyn. She has some other fixes in her suggestions. Carolyn has also offered to help anyone so if you cannot figure it all out just reach out to her. She won’t try and sell you the iPhone 6 🙂 I get what you say about that. Some people cannot even make calls on their 6.
It is so frustrating isn’t it? I have never had a problem with an iPhone before.
Thanks for sharing your experience Donna. I hope you get your bugs fixed soon.

Adrienne says
Hey Sue,
Oh man, you couldn’t go back. I’m sorry to hear that.
Carolyn taught me to put all my photos to Flickr so I back them all up on my computer which goes to an external hard drive and a cloud service along with putting them on Flickr so that I have them in three different places. I don’t want to lose any of them so that’s been a big help for me.
I only have a few short videos and they are of Kayla so that’s not an issue. But I don’t have a lot of apps. I could probably delete some old text messages though. I’ll have to find out from Carolyn how to do that, she’s my savior when it comes to tech.
I also have an iPhone 4 and not 4S so luckily for me I didn’t have to upgrade. I wouldn’t have done it immediately anyway. I like to wait to hear about problems and find out from Carolyn what to do first. At least now you know where to go before doing this the next time right!
Sorry it didn’t work out and you’ve had so many issues. Maybe they’ll fix all of them soon.
~Adrienne
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Adrienne, To delete text messages, open the Messages app, tap Edit, then tap the circle to the right of any texts you want to delete. Then tap Delete.
I’m glad you are backing up your photos and videos to Flickr. Who doesn’t want 1 TB (1000 GB) of free space?
Sue Price says
Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for explaining about deleting texts to Adrienne. I am sure others will benefit too.
Also thanks for the Flickr tip I will be doing that too.
Thank you!
Sue
Sue Price says
Hi Adrienne,
Oh yes I almost cried when I figured out I could not go back to the earlier version.
That is a great tip for photos – thank you. I have not lost mine that I had to delete as they are on my back up as well. But it was just a pain to be deleting them and me not realizing I had to double delete.
I will not be upgrading ever again until I check what Carolyn is saying. Speaking of Carolyn you will see she has responded already to explain to you how to delete old texts. 🙂
Thanks for your comment Adrienne and for steering me to Carolyn for help in fixing my problems.
I hope your week is going well and everything is flowing with your product.

I will share this post to alert the world.

Akaahan Terungwa says
Hello Sue,
You obviously had a tough experience – the one no body deserves having. Sorry for the challenges.
You see, Apple is increasingly getting things wrong by the day. I believe Steve Jobs took his genius with him and his team has never really recovered from the brutal shock of his demise neither have they found someone competent enough to replace him.
For me, the only iOS device I have at the moment is an iPad…and for a long time, I was stuck on iOS 4 – the original OS that the iPad was bought with. And believe me, I loved every bit of it except that I could no longer upgrade my apps or install new ones that I needed to get my work done.
Then, GBAM, I upgraded to iOS 7 and instantly regretted! It was so much inferior to iOS 4! The question I asked my wife was: “Sweet, can a lower version of tech be 10 times better than a recent or latest version?” She was as shocked as I was.
First, the look of the iBooks app took a dimension that made it one of the most funny looking app in modern history (instead of the nice, traditional book shelve style), second, I lost the custom feel of my photos and their default storage location… and worst of all, thirdly, I could not figure out why all the browsers took 5 times longer to load pages – that was the saddest bit!
…not to mention the fact that was battery was approximately 2 times hungrier – and draining by the second!
Cut long story short, I wasn’t thrilled (again) when Apple announced their new OS – especially having read a lot about the #bendgate campaign, the update’s uncertainty and worst of all, having suffered at the hands of Apple previously.
I’m sorry for the challenge you went through and the time wasted. In the dot com life, time = money – period. However, never hurry to upgrade to any future update again (at Apple) till the company fixes what’s obviously wrong with them.
Do have a very great day, Sue!
Always,
Terungwa
Sue Price says
Hi Terungwa,
I made a comment to my husband on a similar line as you about the fact that Steve took much with him when he passed. I remember reading an interview with Larry Ellison soon after Steve’s death where he predicted the company would decline. Sadly it seems to be happening.
It is amazing to read your experience of OS 4 being far better than version 7. It seems they are just getting worse as the problems you are describing are amplified in 8.
Apart from the people who have commented here I have had several people tell my on Facebook they are taking their phone to the Mac store and telling them to work it out. I have one friend who cannot shoot videos anymore.
Oh yes I will know next time Terungwa not to be so quick to upgrade. As soon as I had upgraded I know it was a mistake. It took some days though before I realized my text messages were not being sent.
I have been thinking of changing my laptop to a Mac but that idea is quickly fading.
Thanks for your comment here. Have a great weekend Terungwa.

David preston says
Hi all…
This is a nice post !
Updating to iOS 8 should be as easy as buying a cup of coffee, but the difficult thing is that during the process of iOS 8 update, you may encounter all kinds of problems, like lack of space, device stuck on Apple Logo, froze half way, frozen, slow touchscreen or keyboard after upgrade, etc.
Once the iOS 8 is installed on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch successfully, most of you think the whole process is finished. In fact, it is far from enough, you need to transfer photos and extend stand by time.
Thanks for sharing !
Sue Price says
Hi David,
This of course is a very old post and since then there have been other updates which for me all went smoothly. I do read what is happening now though before I do an update.
Thanks for your comment.
