Sylviane Nuccio recently did a guest post for me here What Are The 3 Signs Of Success And 3 Signs Of Failure ?
The first sign of success Sylviane spoke of is Persistence. She used Thomas Edison as an example of someone with the most amazing persistence.
I have been watching The Voice Australia over the last couple of weeks and have become very aware of the need for persistence in order to succeed and reach our goals and dreams.
The music industry is a tough one and these people must have a “never give up attitude” or they will not reach the success many aspire to have.
I have been especially touched by 67 year old Steve Clisby who is a competitor. Steve has clearly been around the traps and industry for a very long time. He is amazing to watch and truly a wonderful artist. We can all learn from someone with this type of never quit on your dreams attitude.
Never Quit On Your Dreams – in your home based business!
In the home based business game there are often two schools of thought and teaching. One of them being “Have a Plan B” and the other “Burn Your Bridges”. Let’s look at these ideas.
Have a Plan B
Traditionally, especially in the Network Marketing Industry, people kept their job while they built their business. As long as someone is committed to build the business this is a great way to do it.
The downside of this is very often people give up on their business as they cannot juggle both.
The same goes for affiliate marketing or blogging… people often start off part time. Again as long as they are persistent and build their business this is a good way to do it.
Burn Your Bridges
Now let’s look at burning our bridges. This would be someone who quits their job to make their home based business work. This can work but it can also result in financial pressure.
Home based businesses are not built overnight so this may not be the best option unless you have adequate capital behind you.
In more recent economic times often people have been laid off then they have had their bridges burned for them.
A Good Balance
If you are fortunate enough to still have an income coming in while you build your business this may be a better alternative.
What I do suggest is that you need to have an attitude as if you had burned your bridges. By this I mean vow to never quit on your dreams and to keep going no matter what.
You should not have a Plan B that says “if I am not successful I will go back to a job”. That is giving yourself an out. Instead adopt Thomas Edison’s attitude and when something does not work know you have discovered a way that does not work and try something else.
Building your business takes learning and you will not win on everything you try. Know this is just part of building a business.
Your Mindset
Sylviane gave the second sign of success as Mindset. I have written about mindset before on this blog. Building your home based business requires a mindset that will not give up. Vow to yourself when you start that you will never quit on your dreams. Work on your mindset daily. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with people who support your dreams.
Please leave me your comments below. Did you start your business by burning your bridges? Do you have a plan B?

I have written on this subject a number of times Sue. People give up way to easily in life because it’s too hard sometimes. I told a friend once, and self-talk myself always on this topic “if you want something you’ve never had you have to do something you’ve never done.’ A constant reminder for me to keep going and striving no matter what. Mindset is now just becoming a topic that others are finding to be really important. Thanks for reminding us.

Hi Barbara
I agree way too many people give up without really trying. I love that quote you refer to – yes we have to do something different if we want different results. The fact that usually brings discomfort is what stops a lot of people.
I think it is one of the great things about a home based business that we have the opportunity to grow and become more. Some of us are up for it and others are not. 🙂
Thanks for your comment Barbara

You are so right about that Sue and to be honest with you I don’t know if I would have wanted to juggle both my job and an outside business. I just know that for me when I got home I was pooped! I didn’t want to do anything else so I know that a lot of people would view that as being lazy but our day jobs aren’t always the easiest either.
You really have to want something better in life in order to stick with it and I’m just glad that my situation presented itself like it did or I probably wouldn’t be doing this either. I would be stuck in my day job still miserable thinking there is no way out.
As Barbara so eloquently put it “if you want something you’ve never had you have to do something you’ve never done”. Amen to that and I would hope that everyone online today will just go for it.
Thanks for sharing this Sue and have a fabulous rest of your week.

Hi Adrienne
I know you were put in a situation where you had no choice but to make it work. Well you could have found another job but I think you had decided you were not going to do that.
I am sure when you were in the work force working for some high profile people you came home exhausted. I am not sure how people do build a business in those circumstances but I know there are some who do. Maybe what happened to you was a blessing and I am sure that is how you now see it.
I too love that quote Barbara used. It is so true and I too hope people can find a way to stick with it until they have success.
Thanks for your comment Adrienne. Nice to see you today.

Hi Sue,
Well, thank you for starting and ending this post with me 🙂
This is a great post. I wouldn’t advise anyone to just quit their job for the reason that if they are not totally ready mentally, or should I say subconsciously, they may fall flat on their rear end. I know, because I’ve done it and I still pay for that dear miss-calculated mistake of mine.
Be persistent in building the business first, and when it starts taking off and you’ve build that self-confidence, then quite the job. Don’t forget that the mental part is the most important one!
Great post, Sue!

Hi Sylviane
I loved the post you did for me and there are many layers I could pull out of it 🙂 Thanks again for doing it.
I think it is too much pressure when you quit your job and do not have much to fall back on. I agree with your advice on this issue and I did not know you actually quit yours so soon.
Oh yes Sylviane the mental part is the most important part for sure.
Thanks for your comment here Sylviane. Missed you today 🙂

Hello Ms. Sue
So important never to give up on our dreams. To see our dreams fulfilled we have to work hard and when it gets tough, we still need to hang in there.
Sue, I love to use Thomas Edison’s example of the heart and attitude he had to keep trying…. just because he tried so many times, does not mean he was a failure. He was an incredible man to knew if he could “see” his dream, then it would manifest.
Thank you so much for this post and I am going to share it.

Hi Gladys
I too love the Thomas Edison story for the same reasons as you do. He certainly demonstrated incredible perseverance and determination.
I think it is very sad that so many people do give up and settle for less than they really aspired to so stories like his are important to tell.
Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment Gladys. I appreciate it.

Great points Sue. It defiantly takes perseverance and endurance to accoplish anything significant. It’s important to daily move toward our personal dreams. I have found small steps forward are better than standing still:)

Hi Dan
I agree with you that small steps at a time are better than standing still. I also think taking smaller steps is not so overwhelming as it is when we try and do it all at once.
Thanks for your comment Dan.

Hi Sue,
All I can say is WOW 🙂
I think I’ve come here at the right moment. Right now I’m involved in a software development project where it generates income for me and will extend for few years while I build my online business. Well, I have a dream 😉 Oh no dreams.
Financial pressure wasn’t on my side at all as I wasn’t blogging for business and initiation of my online business was successful as I’ve got few clients right from the start. However as I move on, I found with no financial support, improving the business is a real dream after all 😀 lol…
Yet I hardly move on with blogging and all that due to project I’m involved in and I’m sure that right now I’m being tested for persistence. However I walk slowly with my dream instead of quitting on it. Hmm… I’ll find the day to burn bridges but not right now 😉
You have a successful week ahead to work more on your dream dear 🙂 Hope weather is lovely over there too.
Cheers…

Hi Mayura
It is amazing how we can find a blog or article that is good timing for us. I love that! 🙂
I think you are doing it the smart way Mayura. You are keeping your dreams alive working on them and supporting yourself along the way. Many people do not create an income online as quickly as you did and then there are problems.
I think we all have our persistence tested along our journey. Nothing great is accomplished without work and persistence.
You also have a wonderful and successful week Mayura. Keep working at your dreams.
Thanks for coming here and commenting.

Hi Sue,
Blogging is interesting. Especially when you find bloggers that know how to write and what to write about. You know both. Here’s what I want to say about this topic.
A lot of people try to launch a business and succeed in this tough world. Most of them fail. Why?
They grow tired, don’t know what to do, become disappointed, lose hope etc. What can you do?
I tried the idea of a Plan B. It doesn’t work. Usually, it’s just a waste of time and resources and you fail both A and B.
The second idea “have an attitude as if you had burned your bridges” is the right one. It helps you focus on what matters most: success.
What else? Of course, mindset. Mindset is the key. Whats the key element of mindset?
Understanding that hard work is not enough. You need smart work.
What does this mean? Just a few examples:
– organizing your work (prioritize)
– create relationships
– use multipliers (tribes, communities)
– automated systems.
You have to work smart otherwise there is no chance to succeed. Why? You simply cannot do all the work manually. Example: In twitter, it is impossible to get 100000 followers working manually, slowly etc. Your whole life is not enough. Maybe it was possible in the early days. Not anymore. You have to use multipliers, automated systems and many other things.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this post
Have a nice day

Hi Silviu
Oh yes way too many people grow tired and lose hope.
I too tried the Plan B and I agree it does not work. I see we are in agreement with having an attitude as if you have burned your bridges I think then you have to make it work.
I love your tips for working smarter and yes that is key. No one can do it all for sure without automation and planning.
Thanks for your great contribution here to my post Silviu. Excellent advice.

Its really a nice post. Thank you for sharing. In addition, i also want to say that there are many types of problems we face in our life. Some people face the problems while some people give up. Many of the dreams remains incomplete because of different reasons. Those who give up they don’t know about their confidence and will power. To complete the dreams in real life, its necessary to understand what we see in out dreams while sleeping, because every dream has its meaning which tells much more about the life and the person. To know what your dream says, you can visit website ‘meaning of dreams’.
Sue Price says
Hi there, sorry I do not know your name.
I have a book which gives the meaning of dreams (the type you are referring to). I am sure all of our dreams have a meaning. I usually instinctively know what mine are about.
Thanks for your comment.

Hey Sue,
Nicely explained about persistence. As you have said it is one of the most needed thing for tasting success. I know Edison has created 800 bulbs before he actually ended up in creating the one that worked. Thanks for reminding me about Edison as I am a physics teacher I used to teach my children on not to give up like Edison till we are succeeded. even Gladiator movie to fits into as one of the example.
I also read a story about king Bruce who looses his battle and runs from the battle field and hides himself in a cave. there he sees a spider trying to climb to the sealing and it fails six times and the seventh time it makes its way to the ceiling. King Bruce takes spiders persistence as an example and he goes back gathering all his army and wins the battle.
Sorry sue for telling stories in the comment box just felt like sharing my childhood stories. Also agree with plan B and balanced attitude etc. May be I would write an article like this in my blog in future.
Thanks for the share Sue…
