Most people nearing the age where they would be retiring are coming to terms with the fact it unlikely they will have the resources to do this. I have been suggesting that a great alternative is to consider network marketing or internet marketing as an option.
In another post I discussed this option. You can read it here at Retiring: Is it a Thing of the Past
Forbes posted an article a couple of years ago which had some fascinating stats on the subject that I suspect have not got any better.
So if retiring seems a thing out of reach for you I hope you take heart in what I am about to share.
Would You Join a Multi- Level Marketing Company for Retirement Income?
This was the title of the Forbes article and here are some of the stats and my thoughts.
Multi-Level Marketing is another term for Network Marketing. It is sometime called Direct Sales. I prefer Network Marketing so I will stick with that.
- Some stats from the article
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) estimates that half of all baby boomers (76 million in America) are interested in starting a business. - The average 50 year old is estimated to have less than $50,000 in retirement savings.
- There is an obvious need to either save more or find a way to generate supplemental income.
- Many baby boomers are disenchanted with their current careers. They are worn out from years of corporate grind.
- They are shifting their focus from accumulating a giant nest egg to a desire to be part of something bigger and better – and to have a positive effect on others — and working in retirement.
While the stats are from America I suspect they are similar around the globe.
You can read the whole article here.
With those stats in mind is Network Marketing an option to retiring?
In my opinion yes it is a great option. Here are some of my reasons.
The new world of Network Marketing
Many people still think to do network marketing you have to hit on all your friends and family. That is no longer the case with the internet. Depending on the company you join you can use the internet to do your marketing.
There is more to the subject of just retiring than just money.
There is also the psychology attached to moving into retirement. The stats from the AARP indicate that baby boomers want to be productive. They want to belong to something and make a contribution to the lives of others.
Some benefits of Network Marketing
The cost of starting a network marketing business is very low compared to franchises or traditional business.
There is usually good training, support and encouragement.
They offer a place to belong and to make a difference.
If you still have a job it is a good idea to start your network marketing business part time and build it up until you can quit your job.
Many people who join network marketing just want to supplement their income they do not want to build a dynasty. If you do want to build something much larger there is also the ability to do that.
The Forbes article also suggested the industry is poised for explosive growth because of the number of this situation – why not take advantage of it?
Tony Robbins book
In Tony Robbins book Money Master the Game – 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom he refers to our traditional retirement saving system as being broken
I watched an interview with Tony and Marie Forleo. He has not written a book for two decades and the reason he wrote this one is because he is mad at what happened in 2008 and wants people to be educated.
He talks about the baby boomers briefly in the interview, He does not talk about Network Marketing as an option but he does say our traditional retirement saving system is broken.
It is an awesome interview that you can catch here if you would like to watch it.
In summary
Retiring as we knew it may well be a thing of the past.
Think about building a business that allows you to have freedom. A business you can build and fit into your lifestyle. A business that is location free meaning you can build it from anywhere.
That is what I am doing. If you would like to know about my business just leave me a comment below.
What are your thoughts on this idea? Please leave me a comment below.

Hi Sue,
I think network marketing is an excellent option, and you should get started sooner rather than later. In addition to the network marketing benefits that you mentioned, you can get a much quicker return on your investment with network marketing than you can with most other businesses. With most traditional businesses you can be operating in the red for years. With network marketing you can be in the black on day one if you have your first customer already lined up when you start.
Ben
Sue Price says
Hi Ben
Thanks for adding these benefits. I agree with you totally you should get started sooner rather than later. I love seeing the people in their 20’s and 30’s that are already living amazing lifestyles. People can do it way more quickly than most traditional businesses. Having been an owner of several traditional businesses in the past I know downsides only too well.
Thanks for your awesome comment here Ben.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Ben & Sue,
Great points! Starting sooner rather than later! Given the small overhead that is needed, it is easy to come to a ‘break even’ point when the network marketer no longer need to invest money in order to keep the business running.
Can anyone think of a traditional brick-and-mortar business that can offer these benefits?
Viola Tam
Sue Price says
Hi Viola,
I sure cannot think of a traditional business with the small overhead we have in Network Marketing. I did tax for years for businesses and no – not one! 🙂
Thanks for a great addition here Viola

Hi Sue,
I’m sure internet can give a lot of opportunities and why not the retirement, if used the right way of course. Since I’m from Europe (Croatia), I hear often how our traditional retirement system will collapse too.
So your network marketing can be a good idea to start since we’re talking here about low cost investments and not to mention that everyone today has a computer.
Thanks Sue for this post and wish you a Happy New Year.
~ Dragan
Sue Price says
Hi Dragan,
I agree with you the internet has opportunities for everyone regardless of age.
I so want to visit Croatia and I will. I have friends here in Australia from thee. I am sure this collapse of the traditional system for retirement will happen everywhere so we must find a new way – and yes the internet.
Happy New Year to you too Dragan and thank you for your comment.

Hi Sue,
Happy New Year! Glad to hear that you are combining network marketing and internet marketing. That makes total sense!
After several months away from blogging, I am pleasantly surprised that your latest blog post is about Network Marketing as an option for ‘retirement’.
I am a proud advocate of this awesome profession! More and more traditional business owners are finding this a more attractive business path – one that can provide a truly financially secure income stream at retirement due to the ‘passive’ income stream that it can provide.
While I am still actively building my distribution empire (network marketing organization), my mentor, a practising dentist, has been enjoying his ‘passive’ income because his leaders are continuously building their individual business. I am blessed to be following such a great leader! He is demonstrating that we do not have to stop ‘working’ at retirement.
I am a baby boomer who missed out this awesome trend when I was younger. I am now dedicated to educating other mothers about this not-so-widely-known lifestyle business option!
Thank you for this wonderful post!

Hi Viola,
Happy New Year to you too and lovely to see you here.
I love to hear that your mentor is a practicing dentist. I listened to an audio this week from a Dr who is also successful in Network Marketing. When I was working as a CPA I worked with many doctors and dentists as my clients and it makes sense for them to do Network Marketing as their income has not residual.
I am so in agreement of helping young mums with this opportunity.
Lovey to see you here Viola and I wish you every success for 2015.

Akaahan Terungwa says
Hi Sue,
I quite agree with you that retirement is gradually becoming history. Personally, I see no reason to retire (even at 100) because I love what I do and doing it everyday ensures I have loads of energy I would not otherwise have. It is my belief that many persons who see retirement as an option are a llittle uncomfortable with their present work and tasks.
It’s a great idea you encouraged leveraging the unique power of the internet to start (and run) a business. However, don’t you think Network Marketing may seem too complicated for (most) baby boomers?
Always,
Akaahan Terungwa
Sue Price says
Hi Terungwa,
Happy New Year. I hope it has started well for you.
I live in a holiday town where a lot of people retire to. I see them become “old” and less vibrant. I think we both agree it is best to stay productive.
Being a baby boomer and having most of my friends at my stage of life I think Network Marketing is way more acceptable than internet marketing to my generation. I know many in network marketing but most are almost afraid of the world online. So I see it the opposite to you just from the experience you have had. My generation at least in Australia have all been introduced to Network Marketing somewhere.
Thanks for your comment as always.

donna merrill says
Hi Sue,
Indeed, retirement is a thing of the past. And even if I was “retired” what the heck would I do? Psychologically I think it best to keep up working somehow and Network Marketing is a perfect fit!
In our economic status, I would think that most of the baby boomers that are “retiring” still need an extra income just to get by. I’ve known some that have lost plenty of investments they had made and now faced with problems like just making ends meet.
Network Marketing is a great place to be especially if one is “retired” or soon to be. It gives the chance not only to make money, but to socialize with others. It is just a win win situation.
I know that anyone who will be following you would hit the jackpot with all of the knowledge you have Sue.
-Donna
Sue Price says
Hi Donna,
I am with you I do not know what I would do if I was retired.
I too know people who lost a lot of money in the GFC. I also have friends who retired and now work part time. I think we are going to see it more and more. Network Marketing makes sense for retirees I think more than getting a part time job. They can at least have the freedom to do the business when then want and especially if they learn to do it online.
Thank you for your kind words Donna, I appreciate them very much.

Hi Sue,
Happy New Year my friend and I hope your year started off well.
I agree, the way we look at retirement today is so different. I look at my Mom and what she was able to accomplish on my Dad’s commissions and her salary. She was very smart with investing and also budget conscious.
But with the way things have happened even since I have been an adult, I’ve seen so many people’s retirement funds go down to zero. We have to plan for our future and I think one of the better ways is to look into options we have online. Network marketing is definitely a great avenue to pursue. I know you’re doing really well Sue.
Great to see you again and have a wonderful week.

Thanks for your comment Adrienne and you too have a great week.

I would suggest that for the best network marketing, we must learn social media marketing to improve our output otherwise success is not possible.

I’ve always felt that network marketing is the best way to market any product. There is a very high level of motivation and peer support involved in this field that is rare elsewhere. I reside at an assisted living facility Oregon called Prestige Care ( http://www.prestigecare.com/ ), and we have an army of Amway business owners here. The best part- there is so much activity going on around here all the time that you’d never believe that this is a retirement living community.
Sue Price says
Hi Tess,
It is a great model to get a product to the market place. I misunderstood it for a long time but now love it. It is amazing how many people are in Amway but then again they have been around for a long time.

Hello Sue,
The issue of retiring with dignity and with a lifestyle folks planned for all their working lives is such an important topic today. So many people simply did not generate enough funds to support their retirement and an option like netoerk marketing cn easily be a wonderful solution for them if they simply want to supplement their income.
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that with network marketing retired people can build their business around their preferred lifestyle.
Thanks for sharing this important message and have shared it widely as so many people reaching or already in “retirement” should be made aware of this information.

I tried direct sales in the past selling Avon and I felt the company was getting most of the money and I was seeing very little commission. So I started looking into other work at home opportunities that offer an hourly wage.

I guess it depends what you are looking for Charlie. To build a business or have a job. Building a business never has an hourly wage but it has big rewards if you are in the right company and are prepared to work.

Hi, I completely agree with term network marketing retiring. Network marketing is one of the good options to earn lot’s of money whether you are woking on not. But the is that once you have a good idea, and you can able to implement in right way, It always gives positive output. I mean you have to work hard in the initial stage, Once it is boosted at top level then you can get retirement and will enjoy your life without any stress. Great saying and a great idea. Will encourage me to do something like that and pass my important time of life with full of enjoyment.
