MLM Marketing
Just what is MLM Marketing? The name MLM in itself implies marketing. MLM – Multi Level Marketing.
It therefore amazes me when I hear people who have joined a MLM company say they hate marketing and do not want to do it. I have also heard many people in MLM say they do not like sales. I have heard the line over and over that “the product sells itself “– really? I do not believe that!
MLM is merely a method of distribution. A way to market and sell a product. Sure it is word of mouth but just like any business there is marketing and a sales process needed.
First let’s look at the difference between marketing and sales. Basically marketing is what brings or attracts the potential customer or business partner to us. A sale is what brings them into the business or “closes” the deal.
In my business days prior to Network Marketing (or MLM) I have seen very good marketing make the sales process very easy. The reverse of this with not so good marketing makes the sales process much harder. The same applies in MLM.
The major difference is that when we join an MLM company there is no large marketing team and sales team to go to work for us – we are both! We have to do the marketing and the sales.
Traditionally when we join a MLM company we are (or were) told to make a list of our warm market. This still works today however it does not take long to run out of our warm market. It is at this point we need to find ways of marketing that are going to work for us. Meaning we simply need to find more people to join us in our business.
MLM Marketing – offline
Traditional marketing methods dating back to when Amway first started include:
- Home meetings
- Local meetings in a venue where we take guests
- Advertising in newspapers, local publications
- Posters where ever we can put them
- Mail box drops
- Editorial – or advertorial
- Hanging at coffee shops and pouncing on people (bump ins) – and I know some people who do this really well
- Buying leads
- Stands at expos, conventions and such
MLM Marketing – online
Online methods are much newer to the MLM industry and certainly do not offer a silver bullet. What they do, is expand our reach beyond our local environment. These methods include:
- Webinars (online meetings or seminars)
- Advertising online in places like Google, Facebook
- Email marketing
- Blogging
- Social Media – using Attraction Marketing
- Using a lead generation system where much of the sales and marketing is done for you ( I will review these methods in subsequent posts)
MLM Marketing – is online or offline best?
I believe using the two together is the best approach. I have seen people build very successful MLM businesses offline but we are living in a world where online is growing every day. We cannot ignore the world of social media and online activities. Besides building a global business requires us to be online.
I do not believe that we can eliminate the need to talk to someone via telephone or Skype. We can drive leads to us via the internet but we need to build relationships with those leads and if they join us in our business we need to maintain relationships.

Like you mentioned here, some people come into MLM and really don’t understand exactly what’s involved. I often hear people who join this industry say they don’t want to talk to people on the phone. I mean really? Would you join someone in this business and never speak with them on the phone? I have a hard time believing that.
I was one of those that had the “hate sales” mentality. My Dad was a salesman and he use to critique every salesman that ever approached us. Trust me, most of them were horrible and in your face. I just had a very bad taste in my mouth ever since so I looked down on that profession in all honesty.
Now that I’ve been in this industry for awhile now, I’ve come to appreciate all the ins and outs about it. Marketing is definitely an art but it’s one that can be learned. If people are willing to open their minds and learn from the best.
I’ll look forward to you sharing the great marketing system you use with us. I know for a fact it’s a good one.

I also have heard people saying they do not want to talk to people on the phone. It is crazy! And like you I find it hard to comprehend. I would not want to join someone who would not talk to me!!!
I understand if you have had an experience like you have with your dad you would have a “point of view” on sales. I actually grew up with a dad who thought sales people were all crooks. Over the years I have come to really respect a good sales person. Now my definition of a sales person is someone who asks questions and listens and does not pounce on people. The people who have given the sales profession a bad name in my opinion are those that are not good at it. People that are in your face are really just like the spammers on Facebook 🙂 Yet we respect the “relationship builders”.
I think you might know what marketing system I will share 🙂
