I am back to let you know the result of our crazy situation in Australian Rules football where we had to have a replay of a grand final. If you missed my last post catch it here.
Last week we had a drawn game. This week we had a landslide win by one team. The Collingwood Football Club defeated St Kilda 16 goals 12 points (108 points) to St Kilda 7 goals 10 points (52 points) a winning margin of 56 points. Collingwood were in front for the entire match.
Check out my video for my thoughts on what happened and how I think it relates to business.

Another football season is over in Australia. Finally with one elated team having won and the other team no doubt dealing with disappointment. There always had to be a conclusion. I would love your feedback so please leave me your comments below.

Team. It’s fun to hear how the game turned out! I believe it does matter how determined are we to win! Pure determination. Yes, sports are a great teacher! I might have said last week in my comments at the beginning of this game, I have a friend who couldn’t see the value in sports. Her kids are in FFA (Future Farmers of America) and music, she could see the value there, but not in sports. When her younger kids started playing football and basketball she started to see the value! I’m so glad she sees it, now the kids have the benefits of all sorts extracurricular activities and the learning that comes with!
It’s sad that your football madness turned out the way it did! It would have been more exciting if the teams would have come back the way they left last week, neck and neck! I’m sure there were lessons learned by all! And thanks to your sharing, we can be reminded of the lesson: Determination!

Hey Linda I am with you -determination is critical.
I am glad your friend has changed her point of view on sports for her kids. I have observed over the years that sport is good to keep kids off the street as they go through there teenage years. As a parent it can be a pain to run them around to various sporting commitments but I think it is truly worth it. The whole belonging to a team and the commitments that go with it are important for life.
You must have had lots of running around to do with your large family. I bet it was fun though.
Take care

Hi Sue,
I’ve been looking forward to the outcome of the replay ever since last week. In a way, I’m not surprised it was such a one side competition. It’s hard to maintain that level of intensity for a long period of time.
As the saying goes…the better TEAM won. And your analogy of the team concept for business is very true. We can try to go it alone but working together with others on a team allows for better success.
Thanks for keeping us posted on the crazy sports from down under 🙂
Sue says
Hi Don
I was half expecting it would be a one sided match for the replay as well. It would have been unusual to have another nail biting game like the first one.
It is a crazy rule for sure. As Louise said in a comment last week “Only in Australia”.
And this will be our first weekend for 6 months with no football dominating the media. I am sure they will find something else.
Take care

Hi Sue…as you can imagine I was pretty happy with the outcome 🙂 It’s the first time since I’ve been in Oz that my team has won the grand final.
I love the way you have drawn business lessons from this afl match. Sport is such a great teacher for life and business. And you have hit the nail on the head…winning in sport and business both take determination and team work.

Hi Louise
I did think of you several times through the match. Did you celebrate that evening? It was certainly a different game than the week before.
I think there are so many lessons we can learn from sport. You probably have many stories about skiing.

Sue,
That’s a mighty powerful video!
Sports are a great teacher for life. Teamwork was the strongest message I took away. No job can possible be accomplished without a lot of strong, intelligent support from those who are on your team working beside you.
Sue says
Darlene I agree sports are great teachers for life.
As Australia is part of the British Commonwealth we are currently participating in the Commonwealth Games in India. I have been watching some of the events and there is such displays of courage and commitment. I love it!

Hello there Sue! I agree with what you said and that sports has lot to offer aside from having a healthy body it also teaches us so many values as we go along the game. Sportsmanship is one good value that it can stress out by teaching us on how to accept defeat. Another one is by developing camaraderie and unity with other people in order to achieve your goal as a team. Thanks for sharing this Sue and God speed to you!

Andrew I think there are often very many parallels in business and sport. I usually look for other lessons in most things.
