The Law of Attraction – is it Fact or is it fiction?
Is the law of attraction valid or is it BS?
I was prompted to write this post as I saw a debate going on about it on Facebook.
A top online marketer who I have the utmost respect for posted something like this in relation to the law of attraction ….
“In order to consistently receive money into your life, it means you actually have to show up and actually be of value to someone.” That is just a snippet of what he said but it was the general theme of his message. He also said that most practitioners are not teaching people to take action.
The debate then went on with some people saying law of attraction is BS and others saying it is valid.
Here is the thing from my prospective. I do not believe that the Law of Attraction says we just sit around and align our thinking and vibration with what we want and it will show up without us doing anything.
Let’s see what our trusty Wikipedia has to say on Law of Attraction
“The law of attraction is the name given to the belief that “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results.] This belief is based upon the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from pure energy, and the belief that like energy attracts like energy One example used by a proponent of the law of attraction is that if a person opened an envelope expecting to see a bill, then the law of attraction would “confirm” those thoughts and contain a bill when opened. A person who decided to instead expect a cheque might, under the same law, find a cheque instead of a bill.“
Here is some of the history of Law of Attraction.
It seems documentation started in the early 1900s and these are just a few of the people who contributed to this “law” over time.
William Walker Atkinson wrote Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World in 1906.
Walter D Wattles wrote the Science of Getting Rich in 1910 and wrote of many of the principles we understand in the Law of Attraction today.
Perhaps the most famous author was Napoleon Hill with Think and Grow Rich in 1937. This book is still read and studied by many people around the globe.
In more recent times we have seen the teachings become more widely available through the books of Esther and Jerry Hicks. In 2006 when the movie The Secret was released the message was out there once again to a wider audience.
I have read all the books mentioned about with the exception of the first one. I do not believe any of them teach we should not take action to achieve our goals. That is some people’s interpretation in my opinion.
The secret was misinterpreted by some people who thought that the movie was telling us to navel gaze and meditate without taking action. I have seen the movie many times and I did not see that message. No where in my mind did the movie infer we did not need to take action. What do you think?
The 3 Steps to the Law of Attraction
- Identify your desire
- Give your desire attention – the law of attraction will give you more of what you give your attention, energy and focus to.
- Allow it – the most important and perhaps most difficult step.
There is a lot more to each of these steps which you can find in various websites and books. A friend of mine explains these concepts much better than me and I suggest if you are not familiar with her blog check it out. Sylviane Nuccio and Understanding Your Subconscious Mind
Another resource I love on conscious living is Dana Gore’s blog which you can find at I Choose Awareness.
Summary of The Law of Attraction – Fact or Fiction
To those who argue against the Law of Attraction and question it’s validity stating hard work and action is all we need…… I ask… “then how do you explain the fact that many people who are working their butts off are not getting results?”
If you check our Sylviane Nuccio’s blog you will find a lot of information about how many of us sabotage ourselves through our subconscious thoughts.
I believe we need both the principles of the law of attraction at work for us and we also need to take the necessary actions to achieve whatever it is we want.
What do you think? Do you believe in Law of Attraction? Do you think it is rubbish. I am really looking forward to your comments on this one. Please leave me a comment and share.
Make it a great day.

Dana says
Hi Sue,
First of all, I want to thank you for mentioning me, and I Choose Awareness. Especially as a newer blogger, it means more to me than you’ll ever know.
I remember when The Secret came out – and how to me, it seemed a little too good to be true. Sometime afterward, it was discussed that the idea had been a bit misrepresented by the notion that we can simply sit around and think of our desires and poof – we’ll get them.
From what I understand about the way this law works – we don’t get what we want, we get what we believe. Our lives, and everything and everyone in them, are a reflection of us. The way to get to know who we really are is to observe our reality – especially the aspects that really grab our attention.
When we use this law as a way to avoid assuming personal responsibility for owning the role we play in our reality, and instead, give us what we consider to be missing – the law itself is misunderstood and misrepresented. We continue to get what’s missing because that’s our main focus.
It becomes a ‘means’. Sound familiar?
However, when it’s used as a tool for self-awareness, and we accept who we are without judgment – especially our undesirable aspects, then we’re in a position to shed light on the underlying causes of WHY we don’t have what we desire, why we desire what we desire in the first place – and then allow for the Intelligence of the Universe to guide us in the direction that will line us up with the desire – created out of a sense of clarity and enthusiasm.
When anything is used an an escape mechanism – what we create is additional reason to want an escape because we create what we’re focused on subconsciously.
So, the law of attraction is, in my opinion, real. Just not used properly.
But when it is – things become interesting 😉
Sylviane Nuccio says
Hi Dana,
Well, said, we don’t get what we want, we get what we believe, and that’s where so many misconceptions of the LOA come from.
Yes, we always attract what we focus on subconsciously, if it doesn’t match what we want consciously.
As defenders of the LOA we need to clear that up!
Sue Price says
Sylviane you just say it with such clarity. Are you writing a book on it. I reckon you should.
Sue 🙂
Sylviane Nuccio says
I know, Sue. I have a book in the oven for the past 3 years. I really have to come up with it, don’t I?
Sue Price says
Yes Sylviane you do have to!!!
May I suggest you get some bits from the comments here. They are some good ones.
I would love you to do a book that makes it easy for people to understand.
When you take a complex subject and make it simple you become very rich!!! That is exactly what Robert Kiyosaki did with Rich Dad Poor Dad.
🙂
Sue Price says
Hi Dana
First of all I was very happy to mention and link your blog here. I love your writing and thoughts and as a new blogger you need to be found more 🙂
When The Secret first came out I really thought it was an over simplification. I had by this time been around the idea for many years and having read Think and Grow Rich and Wattles book it just seemed too simple. Then I realized the value was that many people were awakened to the idea that they were not victims of life and they could play a part at a different level. I worked with a woman who was always sick and always in high drama. The Secret changed all that for her. She just got she could create.
Yes you have said it very well that is exactly what LOA is about – we get what we believe not what we want. It is not rocket science is it?
I agree the law is very misunderstood and yes if we focus on what is missing that is what we get. That is the very clear message of Esther Hicks. But someone it gets muddied.
I can go back over parts of my life and I know very clearly how I created things with my thoughts and focus. Most people live in denial so of course they cannot see it.
Thanks Dana for your contribution here.

Glenn Shepherd says
Hi Sue,
Ah, the good old Law of Attraction debate. I hadn’t heard of the concept until coming across the film, The Secret. I found it to be quite interesting but I, too, think that many people have got the completely wrong idea about the LOA.
From a scientific point of view I think that a lot of the principles behind the law of attraction have merit. All physical things have a resonant frequency (or vibration, if you prefer). Now this isn’t new age hokum, it’s just basic physics (e.g., a singer singing at a certain pitch and shattering a wine glass or why a chair appears to feel ‘warm’ after someone has been sitting in it).
Given that brain waves operate on certain frequencies and the subconscious mind not being able to distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, I think that the combination of those three facts could well be of note.
Now, just to what extent (if, indeed, any) these factors have any sort of influence on the world around us, I’m not sure myself. I certainly don’t believe that there’s any sort of cosmic force that listens to us and gives us what we’re attracting to ourselves, which is how the LOA is so often portrayed and understood. But from a purely scientific standpoint I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we have a lot more influence than we realise.
For me, does the LOA exist? Possibly, but my opinion is that if so then it works more like a magnet rather than a cosmic catalogue from which we can pick and choose whatever we want.
Sue Price says
Hi Glenn
The Secret like it or hate it was responsible for spreading the message of LOA so there are many people, like you, who first heard of it through this movie. I agree many people misinterpreted the message of The Secret. To me no where in that movie did it imply don’t take action.
The Science of Getting Rich that I mentioned in the post, by Wattles does approach the topic from a scientific view point. I was part of a study group years back where we pulled the book apart with the idea of really understanding it. Science is not my thing and the fact it was written in 1910 and used language of that time made it hard going in my time. If you feel inclined it is available all over the internet as a download. 🙂
Yes the fact the unconscious cannot distinguish between reality and imagined is a vital part of the idea. It is why athletes run races in their minds as well as on the track.
I love your summary here Glenn in that it works more like a magnet than a cosmic catalogue. I agree with you.
Thanks for your contribution to this topic. Have a great week.

Sylviane Nuccio says
Hi Sue,
First off thank you for putting my blog out there, Sue. Very nice of you 🙂
What makes me laugh is that usually people who do have a debate of about the law of attraction are the ones who don’t know crap about it. Gosh, I don’t want to say this, but I can’t stand those people. It’s like me having a debate about Russian history.
I’d say to those people, don’t have a debate about something that you obviously don’t know about.
The law of attraction doesn’t need us to believe in it or not, it just is. It’s one of the laws of the universe. If you say I don’t believe in the law of gravity and you saying, I will jump off this cliff, it will be the last cliff you’d jump off of.
People are getting what they think about every day, but it doesn’t work at all like Wikipedia says. It’s not because I visualize money in the envelop that’s going to put it there by miracle. The law of attraction is more like a garden. If you plant a carrot, as sure as day, you’ll get a carrot, not a cauliflower, but you won’t get it tomorrow. It has to germinate, and grow. There is a “time” factor.
It’s the same with the law of attraction. What you focus on today, won’t happen right away, but if you focus on it for a while it will end up manifesting. And the fact that you believe in it, or are even are aware or not of the law of attraction doesn’t change a thing in the matter.
The problem for those who don’t believe in the law of attraction is that they’ll keep attracting things and wonder why, until the day they die. that’s why in my regular prayers, I thank God for having opened my eyes to this wonderful law of the universe.
Thanks for allowing us, defender of this law to express ourselves here.
Sue Price says
Hi Sylviane
Well of course I could not write on this topic without including you 🙂 As I have said to you before you explain the subject better even than Esther Hicks.
The person that started this debate on Facebook is a very intelligent man who earns 6 figures a month online. He is a skeptic though so not sure how it all works for him :-). I too get annoyed with people who are not open to this and the way that the Universe works.
You make me laugh with your jumping off the cliff example. That would be a pretty dumb law to challenge wouldn’t it?
Great example also of the carrot and the time factor. The Secret also had that in there. They said it does not happen immediately if you remember the elephant picture.
I remember in the beginning of my understanding of this law questioning why it was not working for me. Then I got the part that Dana said that we get when we believe not what we want. I used to also have a habit of talking about what I do not want. I still pick myself up at times.
Thanks Sylviane for your words of wisdom here.
Have a great week.

Susan Velez says
I got involved with personal development about 3 years ago. I have to admit I was a little confused about when I first started out.
I totally believe in the law of attraction. No I don’t believe that if you just think about something that you want, it will manifest. Nothing in life comes that way.
I do believe that what you focus your thoughts and energy will grow. If you are focusing your old vehicle is always causing you trouble.
Guess what, eventually you will find it needs to be taken to the shop. As you start to complain about that expensive car shop bill that you just got, something else will manifest that will cost you more.
If you want to manifest money then you need to stay positive and keep pushing forward towards your goals. Even if you don’t really have a lot of money, be grateful for what you do have.
As long as you are willing to look at things positively and avoid looking at things negatively then we should be fine.
As for step 3; letting go and allowing it to happen, I think that is the most difficult step in the process.
I too have read all three books that you mention. Minus the first one, I may have to check it out.
Sue Price says
Hi Susan
When we start personal development it does take time for us to really understand it. I have been around it for more than 30 years and am still learning.
What you have said here shows you have really grasped the concepts quickly given you only started 3 years ago. That is awesome. You have also expressed the law in a simple way which is all that it is.
I subscribe to a daily email which is a message from Esther Hicks (or Abraham) and it was along the lines that as all we need to do is reach for better thoughts. That should not be hard but for most of us it takes time.
Yes allowing is the most difficult part. We as human being like to be in control after all. We have not know how and when and etc etc…. That is difficult to give up even when we understand it in principle.
Thanks for your comment Susan, I appreciate it.
Sue
Silviu says
Hi Sue,
Well, the Law of attraction is not rubbish. It is true. It describes some profound realities of this world. However, it is not exact science and it was and is subject to misinterpretation and abuse. The best example is the one you have just presented in the post: the envelope.
No, I don’t think it works that way. It is not mathematics. You cannot determine exactly the causes and the effects an you will not get exact results.
I think the best way to approach it is as a general principle: like attracts like, indeed. This should determine a change in the attitude of the person who wants to use the law and, of course, nothing comes without taking action.
One simple thought, no matter how correct and clear it is cannot take you to the desired results. That’s simply because the thought-sphere is full of different thoughts.
When your thought leaves you trying to reach the goal you want, then it encounters millions and millions of other different thoughts and it is blocked. If you want to reach success, you need to think constantly to your goal for a long, long time. This creates a channel, a kind of river of thoughts that becomes more and more powerful and makes its way through the ocean of thoughts until it reaches the desired goal.
However, you cannot simply stay at the window and thing all day long. This is impossible for 99.99% of people. If you want to reach your goals you need a correct attitude and action.
Takeaways: the proper attitude towards life, events, persons and Action. No action, no gain.
Have a nice day
Sue Price says
Hi Silviu
I can always count on you for an awesome comment.
Yes that envelope example is crazy. And that is on Wikipedia which is a good reason we should remember that is a resource of pinions not necessarily facts.
I agree it is not an exact science but it is based on some principles of science.
Oh and you have introduced a whole additional layer to this post. Yes there are other thoughts in the universe competing, complementing and conflicting with each other. I am not sure how all of that works. I just know the basics work.
No we cannot gaze out of the window and expect all our dreams to come true. You are absolutely right on that one.
It is an interesting subject and one that is absolutely open to misrepresentation and abuse as you have said.
Thanks for your great comment Silviu.
Have a great day.

Donna Merrill says
Hi Sue.
I not only believe in the Law of Attraction, but I live it! When I need something in my life, I do all that is necessary to “attract” it, being mindful of my thoughts and words. But of course, I need to act upon it.
There has been many arguments about this and I see the misinterpretation of the Law of Attraction. In the books you have mentioned above, there is nothing that says that we need to take action.
It is focused on our mindset and how like attracts like with no magic to it. The law of Attraction works on the subconscious mind. It also involves the understanding of how energy works.
I remember when I gave my kids the book “The Secret” because it was a popular book to have on their coffee table. They all laughed at me saying that I have taught them all this and more, why would I give them the book? You see, when I mentioned I live it, I do. I’ve grown the kids up with this concept also and they do know that they have to work on attraction as well as act upon it.
Thanks Sue for clearing this matter up!
-Donna
Sue Price says
Hi Donna
I know you live it and you manifest very easily in my opinion. A new house, selling a house without an agent etc etc.
It seems it takes many people so long to get this concept – or principle of the Universe. For most of us have been brought up to think of actions and results rather than what our thoughts do.
I love that story about your kids and The Secret. I too must confess when I saw it I could not believe they were calling it a secret. But then I thought more and realized that for most people this was a secret.
I am so blessed to have been exposed to thinking differently from a relatively young age.
Thanks for your contribution here Donna.

I bet that was some debate going on Sue. So glad you put this out there and also included Sylviane and Dana’s blogs. They both share such wonderful content we all need to read.
I definitely believe in the law of attraction and never heard the term until I watched the Secret too. As a matter of fact, it was the turning point for me believing I could do anything I wanted and it’s also the reason I didn’t return to corporate America. Little did I know at the time that it had been very over simplified and that’s when my real education started.
As I continued to learn about it I thought back to all the things that had happened in my life that I just knew would happen without a shadow of a doubt and they did. That’s when I started to fully understand how it all works although Sylviane has really educated me on thoughts I still may have had that I wasn’t aware of that sabotaged a lot of what I thought I knew.
It is what Dana said, “we don’t get what we want, we get what we believe.” You have to truly believe without a shadow of a doubt and it will come into play. I’m also living proof.
Thanks for bringing this debate to your blog Sue and I love this topic. I just wish more people truly understood how it really works.

Sue Price says
Hi Adrienne
See you are an example of the good of The Secret. I mean that you saw a different way. I love that the movie did that for so many people.
When we start on this journey of understanding the part that the subconscious plays and that our thoughts play it is a new beginning. We have to learn to do life a different way almost. Thinking differently does not happen overnight. It takes diligence and work. I personally think that is why many people do not even try.
Sylviane is excellent at explaining these concepts. I tell her all the time she explains it best.
It is great Adrienne that you have gone back over your life and seen how you created events (except the one!! :-))
I have done that too and still am stumped on a couple of things but I can see most times how I have created events.
This is a muddy subject and one open to debate… which is what got me plugged in to write it. 🙂
See you tomorrow.

Hi Sue
Hope you and Ivan are well.
You have some great discussions, this LOA issue has so many different facets that are not present for most people. Are we only focused on our physical journey or do we understand there is a much greater game playing out. Did we come in with a certain blueprint that defines our journey this life? What sacred contracts did we come in with committed to fulfill this life time. Are we aware of the gift of our emotional state and the power behind the way we feel in giving us clarity of where we are at from a vibrational viewpoint. Do we experience Joy? Are we happy? So much of these facets play a part in the so called success of the LOA principals. To many questions to answer here but great questions to prompt people personal answers. Love always Jenny
Sue Price says
Hi Jenny
Yes I do get some good discussions going here. 🙂 had to write this one as I just saw such misunderstanding being stated.
Ivan and I are well thanks. I hope you and Gary are too.
Yes LOA does have so many facets to it and you have introduced several more layers in your comment. 🙂
I do not think most people know of sacred contracts or our blueprints. They are as you say in in a physical journey – and that is only one dimension.
Yes it is a big subject Jen and one I am glad people do teach on.
Thanks for visiting me here again.
My love to you and Gary

We tend to attract whatever we think, being good or bad. I have not read the book The Secret. By concentrating and focusing on something you can make it happen. The best way to live your life is to think positive thoughts, negative thoughts are toxic. You are really able to create your own reality. I find a good way to create positive thinking is to visualize what you want to happen in your life.
You have heard of the expression Likes attracts like. I remember hearing growing up as a kid. Birds of a feather flock together. This is nothing new but you put in an interesting post. It makes you think

It is a bit of an over simplification of the law of attraction buy it played it’s part in getting the message out there.

Hi Sue,
I definitely believe the Law of Attraction is real. I’ve seen too many instances to not believe it. I firmly believe as you stated, we need both the principles of the law of attraction at work for us and we also need to take the necessary actions to achieve whatever it is we want.”
Although I had always heard of The Secret, it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I actually watched the movie and realized I had been practicing all my life. When things got tough in life and my thoughts turned negative or sad or worrisome, I only got more of that. When I changed my thoughts to positive, all things turned around.
I am now a firm believer in the law of attraction.
Thanks for this. It is a great follow up to Sylviane’s post. The two go hand in hand. Excellent work.

My post was actually done before Sylviane’s. She wrote hers in response to this one. 🙂

It’s true that we get what we believe. It’s also true that if you visualize something hard enough, it will happen or come true. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Perhaps it was the LOA at work, but perhaps not. At the time, I was into deep breathing and visualizing. These work, too!
Sue Price says
Hi Lorraine
I believe deep breathing and capsulizing are part of the law of attraction. Esther Hicks has a CD with meditations and guides the listener through the words with deep breathing. She says that breathing is “allowing”.
I also get a daily “message from the universe” from Mike Dooley and he is big on visualization.
Thanks for your comment Lorraine.

Hi Sue,
What a wonderful topic for deeper conversation! I read through all the discussion threads with great interest.
Like many people, when I was watched the Law of Attraction DVD, it felt that it was indeed a too simplistic view. In that regard, I am glad that you mentioned about your view upfront that Law of Attraction does NOT mean that we just sit there idly for good things to manifest.
I have been blessed to have attended Dr, John Demartini’s Breakthrough Experience Workshop some years ago. In the beginning session, he talked about Quantum Physics and some scientific ideas that I did not totally grasp.
Yet, there is one key concept that I have noticed – that like really attracts like! While I was impressed with his teachings, some friends whom I talked to did not seem to appreciate what he has been doing for decades!
I found myself connecting with positive, like-minded people as I go about networking. I believe that this is Law of Attraction at work, even if I may not fully understand how it works!
Great research and insight, Sue. Thank you so much for sharing!

Sue Price says
Hi Viola
It is a great topic for sure and the discussion here has been wonderful.
The movie was really an over simplification but as you know it did introduce many people to the concept and open their minds to a new way.
You have shared before with me that you did the Breakthrough Experience Workshop. I am sure it was excellent. It is interesting you say that about him raising Quantum Physics. When I did my very first course with Robert Kiyosaki 20+ years ago he used to teach a lot of Dr Buckminster Fuller’s (Bucky) teachings. They were also based on Quantum Physics and I really found it hard going. I have one of Bucky’s books and to me it is like reading another language. It does cover some of the concepts of LOA in there.
There are always knockers of every great teacher Viola. It amazes me really and I too just move away from them. It is way better to hang with positive like-minded people.
I loved writing this one Viola.
Thanks for your comment here.

Hi Sue.
I agree with you that it is not good enough to just think positively.
We have to actively go out and do positive things that will help people.
We must take action and be prepared to give before we may receive.
The Law of Attraction can be a powerful thing to use once we are prepared to put effort and action in first.
It is only then that we can guarantee to realise our desires at a later date.
Thank you so much for sharing.

I think the issue here is that the Law of Attraction seems to suggest that as long as you think about what you want then you can take a passive role after that. It’s not the way the Law of Attraction is supposed to be represented but if you’re trying to sell an idea to people you can always make more money telling people they can accomplish their goals by working less than by working more. Thought leadership is important but so is taking the action to get from desire to goal. I think that is the point of the initial facebook discussion.
Sue Price says
Hi Adam
I do not know where Law of Attractions suggest you only take a passive role. It is not my understanding and nor is it the way it is intended.
Books like Think and Grow Rich and The Science of Getting Rich are all about what we think but also the actions we take.
I think we actually agree on this 🙂
Thanks for your contribution to the discussion here Adam.
